After prosecuting hundreds of felony and misdemeanor cases as a Cook County Assistant State's Attorney, Joseph J. Cavanaugh established the Law Offices of Joseph J. Cavanaugh in 1985.

Mr. Cavanaugh has assisted thousands of clients in his practice, including several who have received media coverage. In many of his criminal trials, Mr. Cavanaugh’s clients have either been found "not guilty" after a jury or bench trial or have had their cases dismissed after Mr. Cavanaugh successfully litigated suppression of evidence seized in violation of the 4th Amendment.
Mr. Cavanaugh has also obtained favorable results for many clients in personal injury cases, such as a multi-million dollar settlement in a wrongful death case.
A Chicago native, Mr. Cavanaugh was admitted to the Illinois State Bar in 1977. From 1978 to 1985, he served as a Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney, serving the public in the prosecution of felony and misdemeanor cases. He started the Law Offices of Joseph J. Cavanaugh in 1985. He was admitted to the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, Trial Bar in 1985 and has been admitted to practice pro hac vice in the states of Arizona, Indiana, California, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.
Mr. Cavanaugh is an established, well-respected member of Chicago's legal community.
To assist the public in making informed decisions at the polls regarding judges running for retention or election, Mr. Cavanaugh has volunteered thousands of hours investigating and evaluating judicial candidates as a member of the Chicago Bar Association’s Judicial Evaluation Committee.
For over ten years, Mr. Cavanaugh taught moot court classes in the Chicago Public Schools in conjunction with the Chicago Coalition for Law-Related Education to help prepare students for a Chicago Public School Moot Court competition. Mr. Cavanaugh has also volunteered his services at Chicago Volunteer Legal Services.
For over twenty-five years, Mr. Cavanaugh has been a volunteer at the Chicago-based Little Brothers/Friends of the Elderly. He also served as a volunteer at the 6th Annual Deaf-Blind convention at Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C., and is a recent sponsor of the Fox Valley Literacy Program.
Mr. Cavanaugh received a B.A. in Economics/Accounting from the University of Illinois, Springfield, in 1974 and received his law degree from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 1977. Prior to college, Mr. Cavanaugh served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He received a Bronze Star Recommendation, a Vietnam Service Medal, and a Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Mr. Mullane is the former Head of the Murder Task Force at the Cook County Public Defender's Office. He has over thirty years of experience and has tried hundreds of jury and bench trials in criminal and felony cases. He is of Counsel to the Law Offices of Joseph J. Cavanaugh.
